Last week I was in Vigevano at the ShoeStyle Lab (Museo Internazionale della Calzatura) to run a 3-day workshop about open source DIY soft circuit using Arduino Lilypad with SLEM students visiting Italy for some days.
SLEM is an international innovation and training institute for footwear and leather related industries and offer a 9-month program and several short courses for companies and professionals.
Students worked in groups and prototyped smart shoes using light sensors, a textile pressure sensor we crafted in the previous days and the Folded Slipper from Openwear opensource wearable collection.
At WeMake we provide a series of workshops, courses and training regarding new approaches of fashion production related to digital fabrication technologies. Drop me an email if you are interested!

Dal 27 giugno al 3 luglio WeMake ha partecipato a Digital Experience Week, settimana dedicata allo sviluppo della conoscenza dell’innovazione digitale, alle mutazioni degli stili di vita, alle scoperte scientifiche e all’innovazione a Milano organizzata da Class.
Siamo stati invitati a esporre nell’area a cura di Italo Rota ed Emilio Antinori intitolata D.N.O. Digital Native Objects, mostra dedicata ai produttori di oggetti di robotica applicata, agli oggetti e agli strumenti che coinvolgono il digitale e il quotidiano, esplorando le loro potenzialità e le possibili espansioni.
Alla mostra presso Palazzo Giureconsulti (via Mercanti, 2 – h.10-19) abbiamo esposto The Culture Dress, il risultato della Maker in Residence che Afroditi Psarra e Dafni Papadopoulou hanno svolto a WeMake durante la settimana della moda nel 2015.

On May 31, the EU institutions hosted the first-ever EU Institutional Maker Faire in the European Parliament building.
I was invited by organizers to give a 1-hour workshop about wearables, so I proposed a simple hands-on activity to involve participants into discovering the world of e-textile:
“Make a DIY textile sensor” – Smart textiles are fabrics developed with new technologies allow seamless integration of textiles with electronic elements like microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators. Wearable electronics gained lots of attention because they are becoming more accessible to the non-technical crowd thanks to recent open source and educational approach. In this workshop you’ll learn about textile sensors and soft interactions: create your own sensor and connect it with a micro-controller to explore its behaviour.

L’ITS Tessile Abbigliamento Moda di Biella é un Istituto Tecnico di nuova generazione che propone percorsi biennali post diploma
alternativi all’università ma a essa collegati, per formare tecnici superiori in grado di inserirsi nei settori strategici del sistema economico-produttivo, portando nelle imprese competenze altamente specialistiche e capacità d’innovazione.
Il 22 Gennaio ho tenuto un workshop di introduzione ai microcontrollori e agli smart textile con un’attivitá hands-on pratica, invitata da Fablab Biella.

“The Culture Dress” series is a collaboration between media artist Afroditi Psarra and architect Dafni Papadopoulou that aims to combine electronic handicrafts with parametric design and digital fabrication on an ongoing research on wearables.
The project was developed during the Maker-In-Residence program at WeMake, Milan´s Makerspace that I’m curating. Dafni and Afroditi spent with us two weeks in our guest-room at the second floor of the makerspace. I’ve been following the work of Afroditi for a couple of years and it was great to have her with us, meet with Dafni and make our community know about their practise.

I was invited to be part of the Jury to evaluate the submissions for the Wearable Technology Competition together with Ronen Kadushin, Alessio Erioli, Anastasia Pistofidou, Elizabeth E. Fraguada, Niccolò Casas, Martìn Rodriguez Montoya. Read the brief and get ready to participate (submissions deadline 31st May 2015)
Reshape focuses on the definition of this language, proposing a new challenge to makers and designers: RESHAPE15 | wearable technology competition.
Proposals will focus on the possibilities of wearable technology without any design limitation. Once again Reshape leaves to designers freedom and responsibility of their own choices. Nonetheless, all submissions must reflect the mission of Reshape: merging ideas with fabrication processes and market viabilities. Fabrication strategies must be clear and reasonable, demonstrating a real control of the production process.
The distributed network of fabrication of Reshape includes Fab Labs and Maker Space, all equipped with digital fabrication machines such as laser cutters, 3d printers, milling machines and robotic arms. Entries are required to rely on those machines as main tools for the fabrication process. Assembly method and production costs will also be taken into consideration in the evaluation process. All winning proposals will be awarded according to the prize pool.
In addition to the economical prize, Reshape offers a unique e-commerce platform * where the best design proposals will be presented and launched into the market. Designers will have then the possibility to sell their own products promoting their design on the international platform of Reshape.
Reshape is a digital competition; hard copies of the proposals will not be accepted. Please notice the exact requirements below:
- The official language of the competition is English. Any other language will not be accepted.
- The registration fee is 50,00 €
- Participants could be groups or individuals.
- Entry identification code (which is generated during the registration) must be placed in the upper right corner of each A3 board, with required dimensions of 40 x 10 mm. No other form of identification is allowed.
- Each submission should include:
- A3 boards in landscape format. Do not exceed 3 presentation boards. Each board should be a vectorial (not raster) pdf file of 150 dpi and RGB color mode. All the boards should be combined in one single pdf file (maximum 25MB) named as: “Reshape15_Identification code_ title of the project”. Each team has to use its own identification code (which is generated during the registration) and title of its project.
- A description of approximately 500 words has to be delivered separately in a word document.
- A physical prototype must be documented with pictures in one or more of the submission boards.
- A video of maximum duration of one minute has to be included. The video should be one mp4 file, maximum 25 MB.
- Each entry (pdf, word document, video) should be submitted online to email@example.com in a .zip or .rar format named as “Reshape15_Identification code_ title of the project”.
- All entries must be submitted via email on/or before midnight (23:59) May 31st, 2015 Barcelona Time (UTC/GMT +1 hour).
Disqualification of entries may occur if the guidelines are not met.

All projects will be evaluated on a scale from 1 to 10 according to the following categories:
1_ CONCEPT IDEA
Will be given significant attention to those projects that reconsider the idea of conventional contemporary clothing in an inventive and experimental way, reconsidering interconnections between users, environment and data.
The design approach must present a clear fabrication strategy relying design solutions to digital fabrication tools available in a Fab Lab or Maker Space, as Reshape target is to merge both DESIGNING and MAKING.
3_ MARKET VIABILITY
It is crucial to consider design and fabrication solutions economically feasible, giving a reasonable estimation for the overall design proposal and its marketability.
